Owning a Moment
Congratulations to Stewart Cink for a valiant win and some great scoring golf while others fell around him. (Live blog here.) But this was, is, and will be about Tom Watson.
Legends aren’t preserved in memory with all their details intact. Few, already, remember that Watson had a four-bogey stretch on Friday’s front nine that seemed, at the time, like a collapse; fewer, a month from now, will remember that Cink was scintillating when necessary this Sunday.
This is about a 59-year-old guy with wrinkles playing golf very well for four days. And that’s what will last past the Twitter updates and ESPN laurels: A simple memory of a guy playing golf, and well, and enjoying it.
That one will stay with us as long as it will with you, Tom Watson. Thank you.
(Side note: Joba totally called Cink winning. Props to him.)
