Last Call: Pregamin’ the Weekend

Thank God It's Football Season

Thank God It's Football Season

Well, ladies and gents, we’ve reached the real start of football season. We saw an uninspiring NFL opener last night, but remember, there’s football all day Saturday and Sunday, so you have no reason to really move off your couch. Now, last week saw a pretty good NCAA opening week with the Fightin’ Mormons of BYU upsetting the Sooners and FSU/Miami actually having a really good game. But fuck that shit, now we have the real action coming Saturday: Michigan playing ND and Ohio St. playing USC. Michigan seems to be an underdog going into this game, but remember what happened last time Jimmy Clausen came to the Big House?

Last Call: Labor Day Edition

Hey there everybody, hope your Labor Day (Labour Day if you’re a communist or Buch) went well. Since yours truly goes to a private school I actually had classes today, so I figured I may as well continue being the only one doing anything and write your Last Call today.

Music : Metric – Help I’m Alive

Now normally around these parts we have some rap or hip-hop or what have you, but since I’m in charge tonight screw that. Instead I bring you a song that’s been stuck in my head for weeks, “Help I’m Alive” by the band Metric.

Last Call: Erin Andrews coming back to TV soon…on Oprah?

Rock left The Girl (oh hey, that’s me!) in charge of Last Call today. I think he will regret this. (Rock note: You survive for today, Girl.)

It seems we’ll get to hear from Erin Andrews soon, but it will be far away from any sideline. Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch tweets thusly:
EA back on TV tweet

Because of my longstanding girl-crush on EA, I may have to actually watch Oprah. This will be a scary first. Will any of you be watching? Anyone think this is a bad idea? Anyone think it’s a great idea? Anyone need an excuse to see her GQ pictures again? That’s what I thought. Here ya go, ya sick bastards.

Last Call: Mourning Scott Rolen

It was quite the non-waiver MLB trade deadline today, with the White Sox picking up Jake Peavy, the Red Sox landing Victor Martinez and Casey Kotchman, and the Tigers dealing for Jarrod Washburn, among other deals.

However, it was a pretty rough deadline for many of us Blue Jays fans; not only did general manager J.P. Ricciardi trade star third baseman Scott Rolen to the Reds, they also apparently agreed to pay part of his contract and made the trade because he was unhappy in Toronto, making things even worse. Moreover, Ricciardi failed to deal Roy Halladay, the most-discussed potential trade piece; I argued a while back that the team should hang on to Halladay and go for broke next year, but the Rolen salary dump makes it clear that the Jays’ corporate masters are in full fire-sale mode, meaning Halladay’s likely to be traded in the winter. In my mind, it would have been better to deal him now and maximize his value with a year and a half left on his deal than hope you’ll get something later on when he’ll be a one-year rental.

Last Call: Closing Time for Pens, Wings

Looks like summer to me.

I know who I want to take me home.

This week, Pierre LeBrun decided it would make sense to write a column about the Detroit Red Wings’ chances of winning the Stanley Cup in Pittsburgh and wrap it around Semisonic’s “Closing Time.”

This was a) stupid, and b) the perfect segue to our Last Call for alcohol on this fine Friday  that will see the Pens and Wings try to claim that shiny old spitoon.

Of course, Miranda Kerr’s coming along, too.
