Lost Writers: Machiavelli on the BCS

When Niccolo Machiavelli wrote The Prince in the 16th century, he wrote to an audience, princes, who commanded an unfair playing field. Today, in most aspects of life, that playing field has been substantially leveled. Sports are a great example of this leveling. Teams decide the outcomes on the field, not in some backroom deals or power plays, and the process is open and generally fair. That is, all sports except college football. College Football, with the BCS and the immense differences in athletic budgets, is as close to a Machiavellian world of warring princes as you can find in sports.
