The Only Reason to Return to Journalism

A conversation with my mother during Monday Night Football:

Mom: You really should go back to pursuing a career in sports journalism.

Me: …why?

Mom: So you could draw stuff on the field with a Telestrator!

Me: You know I’d just draw penises, right?

Mom: I know. I’d like that.

Last Call: Shoot, it’s Monday?

It appears that none of us have calendars, which probably does not bode well for those who wish to get out of mother’s basement and hold down a job someday. So we didn’t realize it was Monday, and LC is a little late and written by The Girl. For those things, we all apologize.

Game 3 of the ALCS is on right now. Who ya got?

Garrett Broshuis could be heading for a stern talking-to from MiLB for his suggestion that Minor League owners help pay player salaries.

On this very site, Mechanick explains why he’s a Phillies fan.

This randomly came on at a party last night, and it brought back many memories.

GM Envy: Jack Zduriencik

As Buch’s Blue Jays welcome new GM Alex Anthopoulos to their front office, saber-minded fans might be wondering if he’ll follow in the mold of the Friedmans and the Epsteins and the Zdurienciks of the world, or if he’ll be another J.P. Ricciardi (or that half-wit who runs my team).

I swear he has something to do with this post.

I swear he has something to do with this post.

I hope, for the sake of the nice Jays fans I know, that Anthopoulos is more like the smart, savvy GMs. He didn’t play pro baseball, has a degree in economics, and was apparently relentless in his pursuit of front office work back in the day. Read the rest of this entry →

Greinke Can’t Do Quite Everything…

I wasn't sitting too far behind these guys last night.

I wasn't sitting too far behind these guys last night.

Zack Greinke is baseball history in the making. He is surrounded by a rather shabby baseball team, but is having the best season by any pitcher since Pedro Martinez rewrote the definition of dominance a decade ago.

If only Greinke had not been hit by a line drive last week against the Tigers. Then perhaps he wouldn’t have been pulled from last night’s game after only six innings. Because he was pulled at that time, he lost his shot at doing something that hasn’t been done by a starter since 2000: Lowering his ERA* to below 2.00 for the season. Read the rest of this entry →

Time Out: The Oreo Brownie, Reviewed

GIS don't fail me now.

GIS don't fail me now.

The lady behind the Walgreens counter picked up on my arched eyebrow as I looked at the featured item on display: A brownie…from Oreo? This was news to me, so I burned a buck and bought one.

I’d love to show you the brownie, the packaging, or anything to prove this product exists. But weirdly, it’s not one of the 53 (!) products listed at the Oreo website. So you’ll have to just take my word that this thing was real, and is now in my tummy. Read the rest of this entry →

Last Call: Erin Andrews coming back to TV soon…on Oprah?

Rock left The Girl (oh hey, that’s me!) in charge of Last Call today. I think he will regret this. (Rock note: You survive for today, Girl.)

It seems we’ll get to hear from Erin Andrews soon, but it will be far away from any sideline. Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch tweets thusly:
EA back on TV tweet

Because of my longstanding girl-crush on EA, I may have to actually watch Oprah. This will be a scary first. Will any of you be watching? Anyone think this is a bad idea? Anyone think it’s a great idea? Anyone need an excuse to see her GQ pictures again? That’s what I thought. Here ya go, ya sick bastards.

Zack Greinke Should Win the Cy Young. But What Would a Win Mean?

Is a Cy Young in the distance?

Is a Cy Young in the distance?

I imagine that all voting members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America are graying dinosaurs who are terrified of all numbers that aren’t Ws, Ls, and ERA when discussing a pitcher’s merit. (It’s exactly as fair as them picturing me as a morbidly obese, socially stunted basement dweller, so we’re even.)

Zack Greinke doesn’t have very many wins. He’s not going to win 20 games this season. That’s a certainty.

What’s almost as certain is that most of the Cy Young voters will not be able to cast a ballot in favor of a guy whose win total does not start with ‘2.’
