But we’re also concerned about the legs of one Pedro Martinez. Does he really have anything left? The Philadelphia Phillies thought so when they signed him in July, and that’s why they’ve penciled him into a Wednesday start against the Chicago Cubs.
But is this really wise? With the Mets in 2008, his FIP was a bloated 5.12, and that was mostly against the less powerful senior circuit. Another likely Hall of Famer tried a comeback like this in the AL East this year, and he, despite pitching well, got hammered: John Smoltz’ FIP is is lower than Martinez’ was last year, but he allowed a .343 opponents’ average (aided by a stunning .390 batting average on balls in play, a far cry even from the Sox’ league-leading .319 mark) and gave up more earned runs than he had strikeouts (37 to 33 in 40 innings) for the Red Sox.
Pedro isn’t being asked to do much. But it’s not hard to imagine that luck, a couple bad outings, and the Phillies’ surfeit of quality arms might all convince the Phillies to ask him to ride the pine.
Lucky for them, if Pedro doesn’t have legs, they can trot out another show pony.

Hey gang, if anyone cares, sorry for not being here tonight. I’ve just been really frakkin’ busy trying to get all my own online work, as well as my volunteer work done before I leave for my show this week (that’s not as altruistic or glamourous as it may sound).
