What’s On Tap
It was Wayne who brought Dorm Life to our attention, and only a little more than a week ago. He mentioned it in our eternal Skype chat, and it began working its way through our staff. (No penis fish jokes, please.) But we come to you a week before the season finale to praise what we think is by far the best Internet series around.
Dorm Life is in the same mockumentary vein as The Office, and it’s easy to see parallels: Though you’re not going to find as many similar characters in the first few episodes, there’s a shared wry wit about the absurdity of everyday life that the Dunder Mifflin grunts and the 5-South residents share.
And, of course, Dorm Life is about college. So there is alcohol. And there are smells.
We all liked this series so much that we each burned through it in two or three days. (We had to partition our chat to hide spoilers.) It’s broadly written, to the point of universality—I defy anyone who has been in a communal living situation to not find at least one familiar situation in the first five episodes—but smartly crafted, so that the rejoinders and running gags supplement the story instead of subsuming it.
The show’s also very much a creature of the Internet age, with pages for the show and characters on Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace. I spend a lot of time shaking my head at people who mismanage or squander their social media profiles, but everyone with Dorm Life does an excellent job of extending the show experience beyond an episode, and, in addition to their wonderful show, we wanted to laud them for that.
So we reached out to the cast and crew of Dorm Life, and they graciously replied to a ton of our requests. We’ll be running interviews and content all weekend, and, perhaps, working out something a little bigger for Monday’s finale.
And, this weekend, without that Tiger guy to worry about, you’ll have plenty of time to catch up on the best thing on the Web you haven’t seen yet. We recommend that you do.

Those Dorm Life web series vids were pretty good. Funny, interesting, and yeah definitely an “Office” ripoff. The only problem with it is that its a web series video, which means in a year no one will care anymore.

And while I’m talking to myself, I think the “overly quiet and usually overly Christian girl on your floor who you rarely ever see” archetype needs to be addressed, both as a character and as a real person. What do you do with a person like that? The answer for the male version of this is easy; get him drunk, get him laid, and introduce him to contact sports. And as a character, his crowning achievement comes when he combines his intelligence with his new-found confidence to land a really hot chick for a real relationship. That’s been done to death; what do you do with the girl version, though?
Get her drunk, take her to strip bar. Watch as she ends up grinding on a dancer, eventually quiting her job to become the star attraction at said bar.
Huh. That was easy. So noted.
Get her drunk. Get her to join a sorority. Watch her descent into madness as her sleeping around conflicts with guilt instilled so deep she can never fully be rid of it.
Continue watching the series because there is actual character development?
I promise, it’s worth watching the whole way through.

I don’t mean to crap on the thought that this might be EA. But what are the chances that this person stood outside her door long enough, without getting caught and just happened to catch her in all her glory. I am probably wrong, but just seems a little to easy for me.
What? Are you suggesting that this was indeed filmed through a door peephole? Those things are installed at about 60″ from the floor. Angle of incidence of the camera suggests this was filmed at about 30-34″ off the ground. Obviously an inside job.
I would have to guess that anyone as conscious of their public image as she is would be smart enough not to let themselves be filmed in any capacity. Then again, I’m also known for being naive.
